Rainy Day Studying ☔ Linguistic Notes, Coffee, and a Cozy Night In
Great news, Folk of the Hollow!
I’m officially back in school!
This is great news for anyone who knows me and knows that I apparently cannot function without a structured learning environment (even if its online) and a weekly commitment that routinely leaves me excited to see what I can achieve that week. This time, I’m working on getting my MA in English, which is just a very fancy way of saying that I’m going to get to study ✨literature✨!
I’m very excited to be back in school, and I’m already having a lot of fun—and with a class that I wasn’t expecting to enjoy!
Because of an upcoming long weekend I wanted to hurry and get my studying done early so I can spend the rest of the week/weekend relaxing, without any sort of deadline nagging at me to come sit at my desktop and work when I might want to be doing something else (I think I might cross stitch. I’m getting back into cross stitch and I want to work on a wall decoration for a future bedroom remodel).
It has been raining all day long, and it’s the best thing in the world 💚 especially since the temperatures have also dropped enough that my summertime seasonal affective disorder has gone dormant for the rest of the year (* sound of one guy cheering in the back of a large and silent crowd *). I was going to say I love studying when it’s raining outside, then I realized that it was true because I love everything when it’s raining outside! I was so happy that I was able to snuggle up in a couple of blankets and get to work.
I made myself a “cutie coffee” (and accidentally made a heart design on the vanilla cold foam in the caramel syrup) to give myself some much needed energy and focus. I don’t usually like drinking coffee this late at night (it was actually around, like, 4 when I made it) but I’ve been so tired this week from multiple stressful weekends in a row that I figured it was fine. I did it last night too when I came upstairs to study and it didn’t affect my sleep at all—plus, look how cute my soot sprite cup is!
Because our discussions are due on Thursdays every week, that was the first thing I did. I’m taking a linguistics class this term and we had to talk about our favorite “new words” which are, as I understand it, basically just slang words. I picked “bet” and “fire” for mine! I got both of my responses done too, so I was all set for Thursday!
Discussion done and nothing but a quiz remaining, I sat down to work on my notes. I got several written down before I realized the quiz wasn’t even over anything I took notes for, it was just to prove we understood what our final project is going to be. I’m equal parts excited and nervous about the final project—on the one hand, I get to read and analyze Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises and two other stories of my choosing, but on the other I have to talk about how he uses linguistic elements in his work and with this being my first week, I’m kind of nervous.
I’m excited for this course, if you couldn’t tell. I just know that learning how the linguistic elements work together in pieces by the great classic authors will help me be able to further improve my own writing. This will be another stepping stone towards my dream of becoming a household name in the fantasy genre, and I hope will help me be able to finally make my own writing feel more mature. I can’t wait to get to that next level with my work, and I definitely think this will help me get there.
Anyway, that’s all for me today! I’ll see you guys next time 💚
