Pumpkin Carving Day! 🎃

So, dearest Folk of the Hollow, we had a bit of a . . . well . . . a set back with our plans today.

We were supposed to go to a pumpkin patch and an apple orchard—we had everything planned out. I spray-painted my wicker basket so it was nice and cute for the apple pickin’, I spent all morning trying to pick out an outfit (and, by the way, the whole morning was bright and sunny) and do my make-up, only to realize that as the time drew closer to the time for the farm to open the skies had grown darker and it began to rain.

Meaning, there would be no apple picking or pumpkin patch for us today.

So then we decided, well, we already got our outfits together and there’s no sense in wasting the effort. Why not go out for breakfast instead?

We really like going to Village Inn. It was where Danny and I had the date where we said ‘I Love You’ for the first time, so it’s always held a special place in our hearts. Also, their steak stir-fry is to die for, which isn’t nearly as important of a point but a valid one none the less (lol).

But when we got there it was packed. So we thought: well lets go somewhere else. But when we got to the second place, it was packed too! Who would have thought that two breakfast places would be stuffed to the gills on a rainy Saturday morning? Disappointed, we ended up going to Sonic and, actually, their breakfast burrito was really good and we split an order of Mozzarella sticks, so it ended up being okay!

Full on breakfast and without a pumpkin patch for which to procure pumpkins, we went to the market and got a couple along with an apple pie to heat up in the oven. I had a very specific plan for the day: go do the apple picking / pumpkin patch, get one of the apple pies and some of their hard apple cider from the farm we would be at, and spend the day carving pumpkins with the warm smell of apple pie baking in the oven and sipping at the apple cider. So, because the first part of the plan wasn’t going to happen, we still managed to improvise the rest!

Danny went back to the market to pick up some LED lights to put inside the pumpkins (cause we didn’t think to grab them when we were there lol), as well as a few other little things we needed and didn’t think to grab. While he was out I added to the day’s festivities by putting on Nightmare on Elmstreet! I haven’t watched this movie in for-ev-er and I forgot how much of a baby Johnny Depp looks like in it!

Wednesday was having a great day too! Did you know she loves horror movies and spooky games? Salem doesn’t like them (he’s so jumpy, I think they spook him!) but Wednesday loves them. She’ll sit and snuggle with us and turn so it looks like she’s watching whatever is on screen when we’re having a horror movie marathon. Isn’t that just the cutest thing?

Once Danny got back, it was time to carve!

In lieu of getting a bottle of farm-made hard apple cider, I ended up drinking one out of a can. It was pretty good! But had waaaaaay more alcohol in it than I can handle (being the lightweight that I am) so I started getting a little loopy pretty quick!

Of course the cats had to be in on the whole day! This is a family activity, after all!

And there they are, all carved and ready for Halloween!

Mine is the vampire (and yes, Danny did the actual carving because neither of us trusts my clumsy nature around sharp objects) and Danny carved Isaac from The Binding of Isaac for his pumpkin because he was playing it last night and it was stuck in his brain all day. After the pumpkins were all done we put the pie in to bake and spent the rest of the day watching trash TV! I’d gotten up way too early that morning and did way too much all at once and was perfectly fine spending the rest of the day laying down. I even had some broccoli and cheddar soup for lunch, a perfectly aesthetic autumn meal!

Although our original plans had gotten completely derailed, I think we came back rather nicely and still had a really great day!

Have you carved any pumpkins this year? What is your favorite pumpkin carving tradition (if you have one) ?

Until next time!
